Dear Interhelpers and Friends,
What a moment in time this is! Oil gushes into=20
the Gulf of Mexico. Radioactivity leaks from the=20
Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. A poem I=20
wrote years ago comes to mind. I called it=20
Disaster Train, and the train seems to be=20
speeding up, and most certainly out of control.
It's now essential to summon the wisdom of The=20
Work That Reconnects. I'd like to offer space in=20
this newsletter for a forum on ways we are=20
bringing The Work That Reconnects into our=20
communities. Please send along news of what you=20
are doing (deadline for the next issue is August=20
28th ). Below we have news from Kentucky and Washington state.

participants in a workshop with Joanna Macy that=20
I attended this spring at the Rowe Conference=20
Center. I'm grateful to be able to share a bit of our journey with all of=
you.
The theme for the 2010 Annual Interhelp Gathering=20
is timely: Embracing Uncertainty: Finding Our Way=20

Louisville, Kentucky, helped organize "Responding=20
to the Gulf Coast Oil Disaster: A Community=20
Conversation and Exploration of Opportunities for=20
Action." The program was inspired by the Spiral=20
and included song (This Land Is Your Land with=20
slide show of gulf area, creatures, humans, pre-=20
and post- spill); open sentences (evoking both=20
Gratitude and Pain); poetry; a Story followed by=20
small group conversation (Seeing with Fresh=20
Eyes); and opportunities to connect with various=20
action-oriented groups (Going Forth).

This spring Gretchen Sleicher convened a Work=20
That Reconnects study circle in Port Townsend,=20
WA. Each meeting biweekly gathering consisted of=20
reading together from World As Lover, World as=20
Self or Coming Back to Life, discussion, sharing=20
an exercise, and song. Topics, chosen ahead by=20
the group, included the points of the Spiral and=20
other subjects from the two books. Foundational=20
segments of Joanna's teaching video were also=20
used. The group's intention is to conclude with=20
an offering to the larger community. The meetings=20
provided a welcome space for sharing deeply. I=20
was especially pleased to hear about Joanna's=20
book World As Lover being used in this way. It=20
offers a heartful and accessible journey through=20
the theory and practice of the work, leavened=20
with stories.=20

Taking the work that Reconnects home: post-Rowe 2010

After a week of feeling all the pain, sorrow,=20
anger, fear, Wonder, joy, courage, connection, UNCERTAINTY=AD
At home I connect with family, friends, the garden, trees, spring flowers.
I yearn for everyone to feel the connectedness of=20
this interbeing earth we live in,
for everyone to know the sacred earth, the=20
life-sustaining, and live true to it.
How can we who don=92t generally live in daily=20
connectedness to the life sustenance=ADwalk on the=20
soil, grow or hunt our own food, build our own=20
shelters, make our own clothes=ADhow can enough of=20
us turn and GET the connection, within our worlds=20
of plastic, petroleum and poisons?
UNCERTAINTY.
As I reflect, the vision and voice come=AD
Standing in knee-deep water, I hear =93Go forward. We understand.=94
In the sea of uncertainty=ADnot seeing the other=20
side, but hearing the voices of the ancestors=ADI=20
know that we, the people here in 2010, cannot=20
return to a long ago ancestor time.
Only go forward in the spiraling web of relationship and flows.
The power of our work together at Rowe bolsters=20
us with strength, support and tools we need to do this.
I bow to the adversaries, come in and out of deep=20
time, and go forth into action. Again and again and again.
A friend who is in despair is now nourished by=20
our energy that I am able to take home from the=20
week we created at Rowe. We experienced that the=20
pain, despair, frustration, and questioning are=20
all of ours. As the dark rears its head now in=20
him, I put aside my quite constant questioning of=20
how we will create the new out of this ailing,=20
sinking, toxic society, and I'm able to offer the=20
light of our knowing=ADWe all journey together in=20
this striving to create renewed connection. We cannot fall out of the web.
He and I link arms, as Joanna continually reminds=20
us we must do, and I remind him that he feels all=20
this because he cares so much, and has had the=20
courage to create new systems and structures,=20
unfamiliar and perceived as threatening, so they=20
are scoffed at and denounced by others.
With thanks to the work that reconnects, and the=20
knowing that there are many of us, together,=20
brave enough to be truthful, honest, vulnerable,=20
and unable to do other than go forth, as we=20
ourselves, the ancestors and future ones let us know is the only real=
choice.

The work with future beings was completely new=20
for me. I often think about ancestors and the=20
lineage I come from, how things were done in the=20
past, etc. But I rarely think of the more=20
distant future of humans on earth. For me, a=20
sense of energy and commitment to my current work=20
arose out of imagining how people in 200 years=20
would still be feeling the ripples of actions we=20
take now. I also loved the feeling of being=20
connected through time to an ongoing line of=20
earth-loving humans stretching both back and forward.
Sharing my film with the group was profound and=20
rewarding for me. After several days together in=20
the workshop, I felt a strong sense of the=20
commitment to our planet of the people in the=20
group, of just how big everyone's hearts are and=20
how hard people work in their chosen paths. So=20
it was very meaningful for me to watch the film=20
with that particular group of people. This film,=20
in so many ways, was meant as a tribute to=20
activism. In a way, it was an offering to=20
activists - a reflection of the beauty,=20
importance, and power of the work that activists=20
do. And showing it in a room full of people=20
whose work I so much want to affirm and support=20
gave me a renewed sense of the purpose of my=20
work. People's responses were beautiful and=20
moving. This helped fuel my intention to=20
continue to use film as a tool for healing and positive change.
The event as a whole was a life-changing=20
experience. Joanna Macy's work and her teachings=20
heal a life-long divide in me between my=20
spiritual path and my need to participate in the world as an activist.
